I encourage you to learn all you can about Search Engine Optimization "SEO"
and become a real expert...it's valuable knowledge...and many of the
resources below will help immensely.
But if you want to skip school and
go to work, then I suggest
you go directly to Google and
Overture, and set up your
keyword, pay-per-click accounts.
You must be a shrewd direct marketer and
actively manage these accounts EACH DAY.
You must learn to bid wisely based on the results of previous activity. You need to
have the ability to track what your conversion rate is for each keyword
(one way is to use multiple landing pages). Plus, you need to determine what
particular keywords are most valuable to your bottom line, and what you're able to pay for these
keywords to attain top three placement.
 A
search engine optimization book which has been getting rave reviews
is the just released
"Search Engine Marketing" by Mike Grehan.
What makes this second edition special is that Mike grills major
figures in the search engine industry, including scientists who have
created search engine technology.
Instead of just telling you how to construct pages that will be
found in search engines, Mike explains how search engines have
evolved, what they are trying to achieve, and how they do it.
The "How Search Engines Work" section alone is more than 60 pages.
Among those interviewed are: Andrei Broder and Chris Kermoian of
Alta Vista; Brian Pinkerton, WebCrawler/Excite; Google's Director of
Technology, Craig Silverstein; and Yahoo!'s Head of Surfing,
Marylynne Wrye.
You'll probably also recognize many of the other experts whom Mike
interviews: Ralph Tegtmeier (Fantomaster), Brent Winters of
Web Position Gold, Danny Sullivan of SearchEngineWatch, David
Notestine of Zeus, Detlev Johnson of i-Search, John Heard of Planet
Ocean/Beyond Engineering, and Roberto Grassi of GR Software.
For some readers, the information Mike provides will be more than
they ever expected or wanted to know.
Transcripts of the 14 interviews are included in the 300+ page book,
so you can ponder these experts' exact words and see if you reach
the same conclusions as Mike.
For example, I was startled when Mike told me: "One of the important
issues in my guide is dispelling the myth of 'themed web sites'
which has pervaded in SEO circles for a while now."
This book isn't for someone who's simply looking for 10 quick tips
on how to build a page to be found in search engines. It's not for
someone who ignores off-page factors.
It's for the really serious marketer who's seeking subtle clues
dropped by the people who design search engines. It contains
material you won't find anywhere else.
MarketingSherpa calls Mike's book "the best handbook on the market
today for do-it-yourselfers".

GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR SEO INITIATIVES...
If you're not really
sure what a meta tag is, then I suggest you click
here for a step-by-step primer on setting
up your pages.
I
encourage everyone to do some research before
getting started with your SEO initiatives. Here
are some GREAT tools and resources:
-
WebPosition Gold
2 - The
resources available through WebPosition will allow you to see the rankings of
any sites you're interested in (including you own). Check out those sites that
are similar to yours and see how they are ranked. For
those that are highly ranked or even number one, try
to determine the keywords or meta tags they're using
to get a good ranking and follow their lead! WebPosition Gold
2 is the first product to combine all the following features designed
to launch your Web site to the top of the search engine results:
Generates HTML pages designed to rank near the top of the search
results; Analyzes your existing Web pages and gives plain-English
advice on how to improve them; Includes a simple, built-in HTML editor
for fast and easy changes; Uploads your new and changed pages; Submits
your pages to the major search engines; Reports your positions on each
search engine for each keyword you are targeting; Tracks the number of
visitors to your site, where they came from, and what keywords they
used to find you; And much more!
-
WordTracker
-If ever there
was a "silver bullet" for keyword
research, Word Tracker is certainly it. WordTracker compiles a database of terms that people search for. You enter some
keywords, and WordTracker tells you how often people search for them,
and also tells you how many competing sites use those keywords.
Wordtracker helps you find all keyword combinations that bear any
relation to your business or service - many of which you might never
have considered. You'll find out how popular these keywords
REALLY are. Then for each major search engine, we'll show you the
chances of making the top 10.
This is a great tool that you can try out for FREE!
-
Search Engine Watch
- This is Internet.com's comprehensive resource site dedicated to
search engine intelligence. This is a great site, but you'll
have to decide for yourself if the paid membership portion is going to
give you added value.
-
Alexa - The
Alexa Toolbar is a free download that makes web
surfing smarter and easier. One of the features I
simply love -- you get the traffic statistics and
contact info for the site you are browsing!
With so many search engines,
where do you start?
I recommend utilizing search engine
directories.
Each contains hundreds of search engines
categorized by ranking and subject matter. Here are
some of the best:
Submitting is one thing, but getting
positioned is a science. Here are some software tools and helpful
resources that can assist you in your SEO efforts:
Should you Outsource your SEO Initiatives?
Outsourcing your search engine optimization is a very smart thing to do
if you find an experienced and reputable service. Unfortunately, the
practice is overrun by spammers and scammers, making it very difficult to
separate the reliable professionals from the fly-by-night opportunists.
Here are some of the things to watch out for:
a.. Spamming the search engines -- avoid "experts" who promise to
submit your site to search engines several times a month, who talk about
"cloaking" or "doorway pages," or offer to submit your site to "thousands
of search engines." These people are using tactics that the search engines
consider spam or are using ineffective techniques.
b.. And don't do business with anyone who has sent an unsolicited email
that promises great search engine placement. They are spamming you. They
will probably try to spam the search engines as well. Search engines
defend themselves against spammers by banning the offending Web site.
c.. Also, be careful about "leader" type of search engine services.
These services create their own pages that point to your site and charge
you on a pay-per-click basis. This is very expensive and the search engine
position goes away when you stop paying. (This is not to be confused with
Overture, which is an advertising model.) The advantage to getting
professional help with your search engine placement is that the people who
are working with the search engines every day know what works with each
search engine and directory and will obtain the best position your site is
capable of in a few months time. They will also avoid costly errors with
directories such as Yahoo, which might be impossible to correct.
