Niche Internet Marketing – Breaking The Mold
Call it whatever you want: fads, trends, the norm, but they all mean, “what everyone else is doing.” It is human nature to look at what other people are doing in the same situation as you, if we did not have the ability to copy from one another, then we would never have evolved into a cooperating society. It is the cornerstone of culture. However, there are times, especially in niche Internet marketing, where you want to break the mold a little. There are also those extremely rare times where you need to create a completely new mold. Some people have a god given gift for discerning when they need to tow the line, or make their own. Lets explore an example.
Everyone involved in niche Internet marketing either has an ebook, wants to write one, or is in the process of writing one. Now when you are selling an ebook, or any other information product, you are told you need a sales page. First natural question to pop into your head is, “Okay, what kind of sales page, what does it look like?” So, the next obvious thing to do is what? See what everyone else’s sales page looks like. So you search the web for some ebook directories and bring up a bunch of different sales pages. After looking at a bunch of them, and looking at some sales page templates, it becomes apparent that many ebook owners either have copied the overall format of other sales pages, or even stole the whole page design completely but changed the text. This should not surprise you, and it probably doesn’t.
Here’s the point: when you surf the web now for information, and you click on a link in the search engine results that brings you to a web page, can’t you tell immediately when you are viewing a sales page for an ebook or some other product? The answer is likely yes, and if not then you will be soon enough. The problem with that is that most people who surf the web for any length of time can tell when they are on a sales page, and most of them click off. They do this because they do not want information from someone who they feel is trying to push a product on them; it is the equivalent of the stereotypical used-car salesman with the pinky ring. When you design your next sales page, don’t copy a format just to copy a format. Try your own format, try something new. Develop your own new ideas and methods, and soon people will be copying from you! Most successful niche marketers tried and failed with multiple ideas before they finally found something that worked. To really excel online, you need to do the same.
Having this outside-the-box mentality is a skill that can be learned, it is a habit that successful people develop. If you get into the routine of looking at everything from a different angle, you are sure to come up with some great ideas eventually. Again, they may not all work, but you will get better as you go. One good idea is to always carry around a memo pad wherever you go, and write down any ideas that pop into your head when away from your computer. When selling something, put the shoe on the other foot. Try to view your products and affiliate ads from the customer perspective. Observing from multiple viewpoints other than your own can help you pinpoint problems in your marketing approach. Eventually, thinking differently than everyone else will become second nature to you.
