In the next years will new regulation and liberalization in online gambling take place and changes in the market will happen. In Denmark the national operator “Danske Spil” from January 2011 will no longer be the only legal operator in Denmark. Foreign operators can also buy a license and everyone can compete on equal terms. How will this influence the affiliate business?
My guess: Affiliates will meet stronger competition. I suppose new operators will demand “value for money”. This means, that affiliate-websites must improve quality content in order to attract customers. It will no longer be sufficient with a good design, many links and casual visitors.
In order to come across these new demands, both operators and affiliates should improve the collaboration. But this will be very difficult, because affiliates do keep their secrets for themselves. It will be interesting to watch the development in the affiliate business, when the gambling market becomes more and more liberalized.
Affiliate marketing has changed dramatically during the last decade. The new political engagement in gambling will both liberalise and increase the rules. Normally free trade among all European countries in EU should be the main rule. But concerning gambling laws a country can choose: Either a monopoly with no advertising – or free competition – where all operators compete on equal terms, but have to buy licences in each country.
The financial winner will be the State. Tax revenue will increase and vulnerable persons will due to extended legislation be protected from the worst impacts of gambling.
Just like free Internet access changes the behaviour of governments in countries like Iran and China you can say that free online gambling during the last decade has forced governments to take action, change and establish legislation in this area.
