Internet Marketing Coach Unplugged – Lauren Botney Interviews…Herself
If you haven’t heard of LaMaestra and her various business incarnations, you will. The founder of Maestra Money is not shy, that’s for sure.
Lauren Botney believes in the importance of communication skills but above all, the power of friendship, dedication and kindness.
Applied to the business world and integrated with professional skills, this is a unique combination. This intrepid interviewer sought to find out more about this internet marketing mentor and coach.
I encountered Lauren early one morning, fast at work in front of her computer with her loyal companion, Reddi the golden retriever, at her side. She was still on her first cup of coffee.

Q: You’ve been a practicing business/tax lawyer for more than 20 years. How did/do you feel about the practice of law today?
A: I have always loved the intellectual challenges presented in the practice of law. As a business attorney, I am proud that my clients were very successful in resolving their differences without the need for lengthy litigation, avoiding significant stress and financial strain.
Of course, a newbie attorney gets courtroom experience in the trenches. I chose to learn from those experiences but to avoid courtroom conflict to the greatest extent possible in my own business practice. Experience is a great teacher.
Unfortunately, and someday I might write a book about this- much of the legal profession is self-regulated and has not addressed many of its own problems. There are many attorneys who propel adversity between their clients to keep their meters running.
I wanted to be part of a different environment.
Also, I was a late-comer to motherhood, had my first child at age 41. I have always wanted children and found the long law firm hours were a tremendous obstacle to being present as a quality, involved parent. My children did–and do–come first, always. When I went through a recent very difficult divorce, that priority took center stage.
Q: But why change course?
A: I don’t look at the new path I am charting as such a tremendous change. I am simply applying my experience and business skills in a different way.
Of course I wanted to adapt my schedule around my children’s school day so working from home makes a lot of sense.
Second, after the divorce and perhaps, maturing into motherhood and middle age, I find I get far greater satisfaction from building and creating rather than adversarial situations.
I can master the incorrigible U.S. Tax Code with the best of them, but it is not a living breathing thing.
After my divorce, I wanted to embrace life with more zest, more joie de vivre. After helping others succeed in their own businesses for so many years, I wanted to get on board the entrepreneurial boat myself. I think that desire has always been there.
In going forward with the next part of my life, I want to take lessons learned and apply them to building my own business. That’s a large reason I am so enthusiastic and passionate about what I am doing now.
Q: What’s the appeal of internet marketing mentoring and coaching for you now?
A: Mentoring and coaching are tools carried over from practicing law. I know the importance of listening and ‘really hearing’ the needs of a ‘mentee.’
I have always prided myself on being responsive. I don’t ignore phone calls. If I can’t immediately respond, I make sure to schedule a satisfactory time to talk. People want-and deserve- the respect of responsiveness. Having been on both sides of the desk, I appreciate that and make it part of the way I work, habitually.
Q: Didn’t you need to learn new skills to get into internet marketing and social media?
A: Yes! That was the fun part. You really can teach an old dog new tricks. Every day of life presents a new opportunity to learn. If you have the desire and the commitment to learn, anything is possible.
Paul Zane Pilzer, Harvard MBA prof, has called the internet the ‘last great frontier’ of opportunity for business. I don’t know if it is the last one, but it certainly opened up a new arena for businesses to operate and promote themselves.
Everyone is involved online to some extent. I had a natural curiosity about that and wanted to know more. I found a company that could help me master the skills I needed to do this and voila!–here I am. Smiling, a lot because ‘work’ is so much more fun now.
Q: Are you worried that your legal background will scare people off?
A: I hope not. I hope it will be viewed as the asset I think it really is.
However, the beauty of internet marketing is that anyone with a desire to learn can master the skills.
Like any real business, it takes time and hard work to reach success. It doesn’t happen overnight. My legal background is invaluable in many ways. I think it makes me a better coach and mentor. But you don’t need legal skills to master internet marketing and social media skills.
Helping others succeed is also very gratifying. When you see personal efforts yield results for someone else, there is a special feeling that goes well beyond the dollar sign.
If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s how important community and personal connections are. You don’t get to take those dollars with you in the end. You can leave behind a legacy of value from personal connections. It’s what I try to teach my children and what I try to emulate personally and professionally.

Needless to say, the interviewer finished her 2nd cup of coffee during the meeting. Asking and answering questions-of yourself–is hard work. It is also the first step in the process of starting a new business or making a significant change in your life.
I wanted to demonstrate the process in action and hope to introduce myself to the online community in the process, “unplugged” so to speak.
