Can someone explain legal matters concerning downloading old games?
By old games I mean ones that have been off the market for years (such as AOE) and the company really wouldnt make much money from it. Like N64 ones and PS1s that run of emulators. I don’t download many games/music at all, I did download AOE a while back and then deleted the torrent once I managed to get a hold of a non-pirated version. I’m wondering in particular if I were to download Final Fantasy 8 for PS1. I actually do have a copy of the game, but Disc 1 is too scratched to work. So I’m wondering, since I own it, does that mean I’m allowed to download it to play it on an emulator?
And I have a shared internet, how do they know who exactly to accuse if they track your IP adress? Because gods knows what my brother does when he uses the internet lol
Do companies sue people for downloading these old old games? Or do they usually just dont care?
Well what most people here have already said is true, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get caught, but then again the companies most likely don’t care.
But lucky for you, even IF they did try to get everyone downloading old games, it wouldn’t matter in your case. This is because it is legal to download emulators and such for old games AS LONG as you have the original disc/system. This law was passed incase someone’s system stopped working or, like in your case, a disc is ruined.
So you’re fine.
