For many years TV executives used the default, that 30 percent of the viewers were all the prime-time networks and 10 percent watched cable stations observed on a weekday night. A sample of 500 people in the Tampa-St. Petersburg last Monday night showed that 165 houses were on the ABC affiliate, 140 at the CBS affiliate, 125 tuned to the NBC affiliate, and see the rest, a cable station. At the significance level of 0.05, we can conclude that the old policy still makes sense?
Three thoughts: 1) Has Tampa-St. Petersburg mirror the "standard" American Audience? This would mean the population compared with other U.S. communities. I doubt that Florida community near the ocean is like Central America. 2) How was the sample collected? Through the phone's memory book? If so, you are not likely to reach the younger audience. Fewer and fewer people have the landline. 3) What about FOX? Both House, MD and 24 were on Monday night with new episodes, and are very popular shows. Did the cable company in the field with their threat to pursue their channels from FOX drop? If so, have you not a true reflection of the nation in general. Unless this happens, I seriously recommend question the source of your sample survey. Nobody watched FOX?
