Affiliate Url Tracking
![]()
Which of my url’s will be tracked in this scenario?
I’m opening a new website and it will be involved in affiliate sales. However, here’s how it’s constructed: I registered the domain independently (godaddy) and have it forwarded to, and masking, my free geocities plus (I know it’s not the most ideal setup, but I’m very familiar with their pagebuilder, eventually I’d like to use Dreamweaver) So for the time being, this is how it’s going to be.
The question I have is, will affiliates see traffic coming from my geocities.com/username/blahblah address, or will it come from www.mypersonalurl.com?
If you can actually understand what I’m saying, Thank you for your time
I think you’re saying that you’re using GoDaddy’s domain masking service, which simply brings up your Geocities site inside an invisible frame. A web surfer will see your new domain’s URL in their location box, but the source (referrer) for any traffic linked from your site to anyone else’s site will show up as Geocities, because that’s really where the links are.
However, you can get around this by creating redirects on your new domain or by using a redirect service such as tinyurl. Then link from the Geocities site to the redirect link, which in turn will take the traffic to the final destination. The referrer will show up as tinyurl or as mypersonaldomain.com depending on which redirect method you use.
Finally, let me point out that domain masking and/or using invisible frames is against the terms of service for many affiliate programs. So be sure you’re complying with the ones you work with.
