Should I be exempt or non exempt?
I am a Report and Data Analysis Specialist in a CRM department. My job is the only one in the entire affiliate of 500 employees. I work in a seperate office from my boss – therefore I work mainly on my own and handle questions and issues as they arise. I create and analize a variety of reports for executies and staff daily – mainly income reports. In addition I am sometimes personally called upon to create random reports for staff. A secondary part of my job is serving as Data Quality for the entire affilate – I handle queries about our database, errors in the database, and help staff get problems corrected using my own judgement.
I asked my HR department if I could be exempt since I am a specialist and work on my own. They responded that they go by job duties, not job title.
But I’ve been reading my job duties do classify as Exempt. Is is possible HR doesn’t know my full responsiblities as my boss and the rest of the affiliate knows them?

it is in your best interest to be non-exempt so that you are paid overtime for the hours you work that qualify. exempt employees are exempt from wage and hour laws concerning overtime. if your employer wishes to keep you non-exempt if you do work overtime your pay increases, non-exempt salary employees must be paid overtime just as hourly employees are.
